Khaberni - British reports revealed that former French star Eric Cantona has received an offer from a group of investors based in the UAE to take on the role of ambassador in an effort to acquire Manchester United, in a move aimed at giving the deal a symbolic and historical character by utilizing legendary names from the club’s history.
The Guardian reported that the Emirati group is also seeking to connect with former stars Wayne Rooney and David Beckham for similar roles, seeing their presence as an added value capable of enhancing the project and marketing it on a wide scale both to audiences and in the media.
This move comes at a time when Manchester United continues to attract the attention of investors worldwide, especially after the controversy surrounding Sir Jim Ratcliffe's partial stake in the club earlier this year, and subsequent expectations of full acquisition deals in the future.
Eric Cantona is one of the most prominent symbols of Manchester United in the 1990s, playing a pivotal role in returning the club to the pinnacle of English football under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson. David Beckham and Wayne Rooney represent two different golden eras in the club’s history, each achieving domestic and European championships and becoming among the most influential players in the history of the Red Devils.
The newspaper indicated that observers believe that attempting to involve historical figures of this magnitude in a potential deal reflects the investors' desire to win the sympathy of the fans and rebuild the image of Manchester United as one of the largest clubs with a popular base around the world, at a time when the team is going through a difficult transitional phase both technically and administratively.
