Khaberni - Meta (Meta), the owner of the Facebook and WhatsApp applications, has officially announced its decision to discontinue support for the "Messenger" application for computers running Mac (Mac) and Windows (Windows) systems.
This decision is set to take effect permanently starting from December 15, 2025.
The company has confirmed that users will not be able to log into the standalone app after this date, in a move that apparently aims to unify the user experience and focus on web platforms.
Details on the shutdown and available alternatives
Meta has already started sending alert notifications to desktop users, giving them a 60-day transition period before the complete shutdown.
Once the specified date arrives, users will be completely prevented from using the app, and the company advises them to delete it as it will no longer be functional.
Users wishing to access their conversations via computer will be redirected to use the "Messenger" platform through a web browser at Facebook.com or Messenger.com.
This decision comes about a year after Meta replaced the original application with an "Advanced Web Application" (PWA) in September 2024, a move that observers see as an attempt to simplify the infrastructure of messaging services and focus on WhatsApp for desktop, which will continue to operate without change.
