Khaberni - This morning, Istanbul witnessed a tragic incident on the shores of the Sea of Marmara, when four people with special needs fell into the water near the Kadikoy pier, resulting in the death of one and injuring three others with varying degrees of wounds.
The tragedy began when one of the group members, which included two individuals with hearing disabilities and two with visual impairments, lost their balance while walking on the pier and fell into the sea.
Upon seeing their friend struggling against drowning, the other three jumped in an attempt to save him, but their efforts turned into a tragic scene of struggle with the water.
Onlookers swiftly contacted emergency services, which prompted the intervention of marine police, coast guard, and civil defense rescue teams. They managed to rescue all four and bring them ashore before handing them over to the ambulance teams.
Medical authorities confirmed that one of the injured, who was hearing impaired, died from his injuries despite resuscitation attempts at the hospital, while the condition of the other three stabilized after receiving necessary treatment.
An eyewitness named Ibrahim Aydin said, "One of the young men was looking at the sea and suddenly fell, so his friends jumped to try to save him, but they all got stuck in the water until the rescue forces intervened and helped to retrieve them."
Another witness added, "People rushed to the scene immediately after hearing the screams, and the forces were able to rescue three of them, but the fourth did not survive."
The Turkish authorities have opened an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances and whether there was any negligence or failure in safety procedures at the sea pier.
