The Argentine substitute Emiliano Buendia scored the winning goal 16 minutes after replacing Ivorian Yves Bissouma, following a pass from French international defender Lucas Digne (77).
It was the third consecutive win for Aston Villa and their third this season after failing to taste victory in their first five matches (three draws and two losses), bringing their points to 12 points and advancing to the tenth position.
Aston Villa responded to its longest start without a win in a season since 1964 with five consecutive wins in various competitions, three in the league and two in the Europa League, extending their winning streak to eight matches.
On the other hand, Tottenham suffered their second defeat this season along with four wins and two draws, freezing their points at 14 and falling to the sixth place on goal difference behind their neighbor Chelsea who won against their host Nottingham Forest 3-0 on Saturday at the opening of the round.
