Khaberni - Despite all the official, academic, and popular efforts made to curb university violence in Jordan, this phenomenon still rears its head occasionally, reminding us that the problem is deeper than just a passing brawl within university walls. It is not an isolated incident, but rather a reflection of cumulative social, cultural, and educational flaws, finding its way into places that are supposed to be beacons of knowledge and enlightenment.
The spark of university violence often starts from a simple dispute or even a misunderstanding, but quickly escalates into group confrontations involving sticks and stones, with tribal and regional loyalties intervening, transforming the university from an academic sanctuary into a battlefield, shattering the image of the educated and composed university student, replacing it with regrettable scenes that tarnish the reputation of higher education in Jordan which we have long been proud of.
Experts believe that university violence is not the result of a momentary whim but a consequence of accumulations that start from home, school, and society, where seeds of violence are planted in early socialization behaviors, amid a weak culture of dialogue and respect for others. Unemployment, life pressures, and general frustration also contribute to the youth's propensity to explode at any moment, reflecting in their behavior inside the university.
The Ministry of Higher Education and Jordanian universities have adopted a series of preventative measures, such as enhancing extracurricular activities, applying strict disciplinary sanctions, and raising awareness through lectures and seminars. However, these efforts still clash with a deeply rooted social and cultural reality that is difficult to change in the short term, where the issue lies not so much in the laws as in the culture and behavior.
Combating university violence requires a holistic vision that starts with reforming the system of values and behavior in society, and restoring the university's role as an educational institution before being academic. It also requires promoting a culture of dialogue and acceptance of differences, and fostering an inclusive national identity that transcends narrow affiliations.
The university must remain a space for discussion and free thought, not an arena for rivalries. If we want to see a generation capable of building the future, we must restore the true mission of the university as a factory of minds, not a battleground for settling scores.
