Khaberni - A recent Japanese study showed that extracts from passion fruit, or passion fruit, protect retinal cells from age-related damage.
The study, published on the Scientific Reports website, showed that passion fruit extracts have the ability to protect retinal cells from oxidative stress damage, which is the main cause of age-related macular degeneration.
Experiments showed that passion fruit extract and the polyphenol compound "piceatannol" it contains almost completely restore damaged cells to their natural vitality. Treating retinal pigment epithelial (ARPE-19) cells with passion fruit extract increased their activity by more than 30%, and when exposed to hydrogen peroxide, the cells regained up to 90% of their original energy.
The researchers explained that piceatannol not only neutralizes free radicals but also regulates mitochondrial functions and restores the synthesis of ATP, the primary source of cell energy.
The research team believes that passion fruit seed extract represents a promising component for functional foods and preventive preparations to maintain eye health, emphasizing that the study was conducted on cellular models, and more experiments on animals and humans are needed to confirm these benefits practically.
