Khaberni - The judicial authorities in Sweden ordered on Thursday the detention of a Syrian youth suspected of killing Salwan Momika, the Iraqi Christian who repeatedly set fire to copies of the Holy Quran in 2023, causing widespread anger in the Muslim world.
The Swedish authorities are still searching for the suspect.
Momika was shot dead more than 8 months ago, specifically on January 29 last year, in an apartment in southern Stockholm.
The Swedish television, quoting police sources, mentioned that Salwan Momika was shot inside a house in the town of Södertälje, located about 35 kilometers south of Stockholm.
According to Swedish media, the Iraqi refugee was live-streaming on TikTok when he was shot.
Prosecutor Rasmus Oman stated in a press release, "We have a clear picture of what happened. After thorough technical investigations and examining surveillance footage, we requested the detention of a person pending investigation," adding, "Currently, we do not know the whereabouts of the suspect."
According to the documents submitted by the Södertälje court near Stockholm, the suspect is 24 years old and is of Syrian nationality.
Hours after the crime, the authorities detained 5 individuals who were subsequently released after two days. In March, they were completely excluded from the case.
Momika was killed a few hours before a Stockholm court was to issue a sentence convicting him along with a partner named Salwan Najm.
After a delay of a few days due to the crime, the court eventually convicted Salwan Najm, also an Iraqi, aged 50, of incitement to hatred, and the verdict was appealed.
The activities of Salwan Momika greatly angered the Muslim world. In Baghdad, angry protesters attacked the Swedish embassy building twice in July 2023.
