Khaberni - A British medical expert revealed a simple home method that provides a clear indicator of the health of the gut, without the need for any laboratory tests.
Dr. Hilary Jones, a British general practitioner and a famous medical broadcaster in British media, said that what is known as "intestinal delay" can cause annoying symptoms such as bloating, poor digestion, and constipation, which are indicators that the digestive system is not functioning as efficiently as required. However, there is a very simple test that anyone can perform at home.
The doctor explains: "All you have to do is eat a few kernels of sweet corn, and then notice when they appear in the stool, because these kernels are not digested in the intestines and come out almost as they are."
If the kernels appear after 12 to 24 hours, it means that the intestines are functioning healthily and normally. If the time is shorter than that, it may indicate poor absorption of nutrients. And if the duration exceeds 24 hours, the intestines may be slow or suffering from constipation.
Dr. Jones adds that this "corn test" has been used for years as a simple method to assess what is known as gut transit time, i.e., the time it takes for food to pass from the mouth to excretion.
Doctors warn that chronic constipation should not be ignored, as recent studies link it to an increased risk of colorectal cancer, which has increased by up to 50% among those under fifty in the last three decades.
Doctors affirm that the most important early symptoms of this type of cancer include: the presence of blood in the stool, a change in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, constant fatigue or iron deficiency anemia, as well as bloating or a feeling of rapid fullness after eating
Individuals who notice these symptoms or abnormal results in the corn test are advised to immediately consult a doctor for a more accurate medical evaluation, as early detection greatly increases the chances of recovery.
