International Finance Corporation Confirms Support for the National Carrier Project in Jordan

Khaberni - The Vice President of the International Finance Corporation for the Middle East and Central Asia, Ricardo Politi, reaffirmed the institution's commitment to supporting the desalination and water transport project from Aqaba to Amman, known as the National Water Carrier project.

This was stated during a meeting between Politi and the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Zena Toukan, on the sidelines of the annual meetings of the IMF and the World Bank in Washington.

Politi said that both sides are working to enhance existing cooperation in order to achieve this transformative project, which aims to address the challenges of water scarcity in Jordan, pointing out that joint efforts are focused on mobilizing the necessary financing and making the project more feasible and financially sustainable.

He added that the International Finance Corporation and the Ministry of Planning are committed to pushing this project to implementation by finding viable solutions to the water crisis facing the Kingdom, being one of the countries with the least water resources in the world.

Politi also mentioned that the meeting also discussed future cooperation opportunities in various fields that would support sustainable growth and enhance Jordan's regional position in sectors including healthcare, sustainable financing, agriculture, and public-private partnerships.

The National Water Carrier project is the largest infrastructure project in Jordan, with a carrier line stretching 450 kilometers from Aqaba to Amman, and relies on Reverse Osmosis technology to desalinate 300 million cubic meters annually. This technology is a technical process for purifying and treating seawater and converting saline water into potable water.
