New Dietary Guidelines for Treating Chronic Constipation

Khaberni - Researchers from King’s College London stated that kiwi fruit, rye bread, and mineral-rich water help alleviate chronic constipation.

To prepare the new guidelines, the researchers reviewed more than 75 clinical trials.
New guidelines

Kings College London researchers supervised the update of the dietary guidelines for treating chronic constipation, pointing to psyllium fiber supplements, certain probiotic strains, friendly bacteria, and magnesium oxide supplements, along with kiwi. The results were published in the "Journal of the British Nutrition Society", stating that other widely recommended methods, including general "high-fiber diets" and senna supplements, a type of laxative, lack strong evidence of their effectiveness. According to "Medical Express", the new guidelines aim to change the way doctors, nurses, and dietitians handle this common condition in clinical practice.
Self-management of symptoms

These guidelines could also allow for better self-management of symptoms, especially through food and drink.

Constipation is a chronic condition that significantly affects the quality of life and imposes a substantial financial burden on patients and healthcare systems. Until now, clinical guidelines have only offered limited dietary recommendations, sometimes outdated, focusing on increasing the intake of dietary fibers and fluids.
