United Nations reveals Gaza reconstruction bill

Khaberni - Jakob Seyers, an official from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced that the cost of reconstructing the Gaza Strip is estimated at about 70 billion dollars.

During a press conference held in Geneva, he pointed to early promising indicators from a number of countries, including the United States and countries from Arab and European regions, showing their readiness to contribute to this massive effort.

He said that the program has already received "very good indicators," without providing further details about the size or nature of the commitments.

He explained that the war between Israel and Hamas, which lasted for two years, left at least 55 million tons of rubble in the sector.

Seyers added that the next phase will witness intensified efforts to mobilize international financing and launch reconstruction plans, emphasizing that the priority will be to coordinate support between donor countries and United Nations bodies to ensure Gaza is rebuilt in a sustainable and safe manner.

He noted that the extent of the destruction requires a comprehensive plan starting with debris removal and rehabilitation of vital infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, and water and electricity networks, with the aim of accelerating the return of normal life to the sector.

These statements come days before an international conference dedicated to discussing the details of assistance and mechanisms for implementing the first phase of reconstruction, amid expectations that international support will play a pivotal role in achieving long-term stability in Gaza.
