Jordanian Women Resort to Renting Gold and a Fatwa Clarifies the Ruling

Khaberni - With the crazy rise in gold prices and their breaking unprecedented record levels, many Jordanian women have turned to renting gold for their occasions instead of buying it.

A recently married Jordanian woman told "Khaberni" that the dowry presented to her was not enough to buy gold, especially after the price per gram exceeded 80 dinars.

She added that she considered several solutions, such as buying counterfeit gold (Italian or Russian), but eventually settled on renting gold from one of her relatives for a month.

She pointed out that this idea has become popular among many girls about to get married, as they settle for buying one or two pieces of gold and rent the rest.

The Shari'a Ruling

In turn, one of the specialized sheikhs explained to the "Khaberni" site that renting gold or jewelry for a known amount and specific duration is permissible in Islamic law.

He clarified that there is no objection to leasing jewelry for a known fee and duration, with the possibility of taking collateral for it.
