Iceland Delays Frances World Cup Qualification

Khaberni - The French team's clinching of the direct qualification spot for the 2026 World Cup finals has been postponed, following their 2-2 draw with host team Iceland in the fourth round of Group Four of the European qualifiers.

Iceland took the lead in the 39th minute through Viktor Pálsson, before Christopher Nkunku equalized for the French team in the 63rd minute.

In the 68th minute, Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the second goal for the French team, while the Icelandic team scored the equalizing goal in the 70th minute through Kristjan Hilénsson.

The French team, the 2018 world champions and runners-up in 2022, raised their points to ten at the top of Group Four, three points ahead of the Ukrainian team, which is in second place. They will meet in the next round in November.

On the other hand, the Icelandic team raised their points to four in third place, while the Azerbaijani team occupies the last fourth place with one point.

The group leader will qualify directly to the 2026 World Cup finals in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
