OpenAI collaborates with Broadcom to produce its first AI processors

Khaberni - "OpenAI" has formed a partnership with Broadcom to produce its first proprietary artificial intelligence processors, in the latest deal in the chip field for the developer of "ChatGPT", part of its accelerated effort to secure the necessary computing power to meet the increasing demand for its services.

The companies announced on Monday that "OpenAI" will design the chips, which "Broadcom" will develop and deploy starting from the second half of 2026.

The companies will introduce custom chips with a capacity of 10 gigawatts, whose energy use approximately equals the needs of over 8 million homes in the United States or five times the electricity generated by the Hoover Dam, according to "Reuters".

This agreement is the latest in a series of massive investments in artificial intelligence chips, which have highlighted the increasing demand for computing power in the technology sector, in its continuous pursuit to build systems that match or exceed human intelligence.

Last week, "OpenAI" revealed a deal to supply 6 gigawatt AI chips with AMD, which includes an option to buy a share in the chip manufacturing company, days after announcing that Nvidia plans to invest up to $100 billion in "OpenAI" and supply it with data center systems with a capacity of at least 10 gigawatts.

Sam Altman, CEO of "OpenAI," said in a statement: "The partnership with Broadcom is a crucial step in building the infrastructure needed to unleash the potential of artificial intelligence."

No financial details of the agreement were disclosed, and it was not immediately clear how "OpenAI" will finance the deal.

This partnership with "Broadcom" positions "OpenAI" among cloud computing giants like "Google" and "Amazon," who are developing custom chips to meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence and reduce reliance on expensive and supply-limited "Nvidia" processors.

However, this approach is not a sure bet; similar efforts by "Microsoft" and "Meta" have faced delays or failed to match the performance of "Nvidia" chips, and analysts believe that custom chips do not pose a threat to "Nvidia’s" dominance in the short term.

Nevertheless, the rise of custom chips has turned Broadcom - long known for its networking equipment - into one of the biggest winners from the generative artificial intelligence boom, as its stock price has increased almost sixfold since the end of 2022.

"Broadcom" and "OpenAI" announced on Monday that the deployment of the new custom chips will be completed by the end of 2029, based on the current joint development and supply agreements between them.
