Discovering Disturbing Flaws in Popular Sunscreens

Khaberni - The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is considered a fundamental indicator for consumers wishing to protect against harmful ultraviolet rays. However, inconsistencies in testing methods have led to significant variations in results.

SPF tests usually involve exposing human skin to ultraviolet rays and measuring the degree of redness, but variations in skin response and experimental conditions make the ratings inaccurate. As a result, some products may show exaggerated numbers despite their actual poor effectiveness.

Experts have warned that this issue is not only about losing product effectiveness, but also poses a risk to public health, as it increases the chances of sunburn, DNA damage, and long-term skin cancer.
Reasons for the malfunction.. from the laboratory to manufacturing

TGA explained that fundamental formulation flaws might be behind the decreased effectiveness of sunscreens. These flaws include poor distribution of active filters on the skin, degradation by light, or weak chemical stabilizers, in addition to errors in manufacturing and packaging processes such as exposure to heat or improper mixing, leading to the degradation of ingredients.

While using a specific base formulation does not necessarily mean that the product is a failure, the similarity of ingredients among various brands raises concerns about the repetitive nature of the problem on a large scale.
Tips for consumers

The Therapeutic Goods Administration advised consumers to review TGA and Choice websites to find out the list of affected brands and batches, and to contact companies to verify products before using them.

In case of proven malfunction, it is advised not to rely on the product at all during sun exposure, and to return it to refund the value or replace it, in addition to following official updates to ensure reliable protection.

Experts also called for the imposition of stricter testing standards and greater transparency from companies to prevent misleading consumers and ensure the effectiveness of products used daily to protect from one of the most dangerous causes of skin cancer.
