Khaberni - A man from the Russian region of Buryatia was shocked when he received an official letter from a bank demanding he repay loan installments valued at hundreds of thousands of rubles, despite never having applied for any loans in his life.
According to Russian media reports, the man could not believe what he read in the notice about his payment delays until he reviewed it with the bank and discovered that three loans totaling about 418,000 rubles had been registered in his name without his knowledge or signature.
The investigations traced the story back to 2021, when the man issued a new bank card linked to his old phone number. By chance, he informed his then-girlfriend about the card details, and after they separated in 2022, the card and phone sim were left inside an old device at her house, thinking they were of no significant value.
However, an investigation opened by the police of Buryatia after the man's report led to a shocking surprise; it turned out that the 38-year-old daughter of his former girlfriend had committed the fraud. She used the old card and phone number to activate the bank's app on her phone and then issued three complete loans in the victim's name.
The accused admitted during questioning that she had spent all the money on her personal needs, without the man knowing anything about what was happening.
The authorities have announced the opening of a criminal case against her on charges of banking fraud, while the victim is now demanding that the debts be dropped and that he be compensated for the damages incurred, and investigations are still ongoing.
