Khaberni - His Highness Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, Crown Prince met in Paris, today, Thursday, Dr. Khalid Al-Anany, the elected Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
During the meeting, the Crown Prince congratulated Al-Anany on the occasion of the organization's executive council voting for his proposal to assume the position of Director-General of UNESCO, expressing his wishes for his success and luck.
His Highness emphasized Jordan's commitment to continue cooperating with the organization in the scientific fields and preserving cultural and human heritage, appreciating the organization's support to the Kingdom in the areas of tangible and intangible heritage, education, and youth empowerment.
Speaking about Jerusalem, the Crown Prince stressed the importance of UNESCO’s role in preserving the current status of the Old City and its walls, as they are registered, at Jordan’s request, on the list of World Heritage Sites and Heritage in Danger.
His Highness pointed out the necessity of working on the implementation of UNESCO's decisions that strongly urge the protection of the authentic Arab Islamic and Christian identities of Jerusalem and its holy sites, especially at this time when the existing historical and legal situation in Jerusalem is facing unprecedented violations.
The Crown Prince reaffirmed Jordan's ongoing historical and religious role in the guardianship of the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, based on the Hashemite custodianship over these sites, confirming the continued intensive diplomatic efforts of Jordan in coordination with the State of Palestine and both the Arab and Islamic groups in the organization for this purpose.
His Highness expressed Jordan’s commitment to preserving the Jordanian sites listed on the World Heritage list, pointing to the recent inclusion of Ajloun and Yarmouk reserves in UNESCO's global network of biosphere reserves.
The meeting discussed the progress of work to include the Aqaba Marine Reserve on the list of World Heritage Sites, in addition to Jordan's efforts to develop vocational and technical education.
