The Economic Court in Egypt decided to reserve the appeal of the famous content creator known as "Karwan Mashakil" on the verdict issued for imprisoning him for two years and fining him 100,000 Egyptian pounds, after he was accused of insulting and defaming media personality Reham Saeed and broadcasting indecent content.
The court is scheduled to issue its verdict on October 22nd.
The Economic Court had previously issued its preliminary verdict sentencing the accused to two years in prison, and fining him 100,000 Egyptian pounds, with a 10,000 Egyptian pounds bail to temporarily suspend the execution, after convicting him of insulting and defaming Reham Saeed, and publishing electronic content described as indecent to public decency.
The details of the incident date back to two complaints filed by the media personality Reham Saeed to the Public Prosecutor against the accused, in which she accused him of offending the Egyptian state, spreading rumors, and using language that violates public decency.
The first complaint included accusations of him broadcasting video clips discussing water pollution, which according to the complaint caused panic and confusion among the citizens, while the second complaint referred to his publication of content containing inappropriate insinuations and language, crossing the bounds of social values and traditions.
Reham Saeed confirmed in her complaint that she submitted these grievances in her capacity as a journalist and a citizen concerned about the reputation of her country, demanding the application of the law to everyone who misuses digital platforms to spread lies or harm the public values of Egyptian society.
