Khaberni - The use of artificial intelligence tools from the category of deep language models like "ChatGPT" and others is widespread among students of various age groups and educational stages.
The uses of such models vary from helping to explain or even summarize study materials and answering some questions that students find difficult to understand.
But what impact does the use of artificial intelligence have on students in different educational stages? And is it a positive or negative impact?
The study conducted by researchers at the Australian Institute for Machine Learning at the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia, as well as the "Data61" center affiliated with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization in Australia, tries to answer these questions.
Study Criteria
The study relied on the educational methodology of Gert Biesta to test the impact of artificial intelligence models on the educational process and the students using them.
This methodology measures three different criteria for assessing the quality and efficiency of education:
-
- Efficiency: This criterion refers to the mechanism of acquiring knowledge, skills, and abilities.
-
- Social engagement: It measures the extent to which a student is able to integrate into cultural, social, and cooperative learning communities.
-
- Self-capabilities: It measures the student's ability as an independent individual capable of making decisions on their own and bearing responsibility.
The study then conducted a cumulative analysis of more than 133 independent and separate studies, including experiments from 2022 to 2025, and encompassed various educational stages from higher education to regular schools and kindergartens in some studies.
The study primarily focused on the "ChatGPT" model, as it was used in 87% of the total experiments included in the study.
Positive Impact on Educational Efficiency
The results of the study concluded that the use of artificial intelligence models had a clear and significant positive impact on the efficiency of education and the quality of the process itself.
This means that students who relied on artificial intelligence models showed a higher achievement rate than others when using artificial intelligence tools as a personal tutor they could talk to.
The results were more evident when students found a clear framework for using artificial intelligence tools to achieve desired outcomes and understand what was required of them.
The study also found a positive impact on the social communication process among different students, but this effect largely depended on the mechanism of using artificial intelligence, as the tools encouraged students to sit together and discuss the commands and results associated with them.
However, the impact of artificial intelligence on the development of self-capabilities was generally lower, and although it was positive overall, it was less than others.
This can be understood because artificial intelligence makes scientific decisions and follows different approaches without reverting to the students.
Is the Impact of Artificial Intelligence Positive?
It cannot be definitively stated that artificial intelligence has a positive or negative impact, as it clearly depends on the usage mechanism an individual uses with artificial intelligence.
In the case of this study, students relied on artificial intelligence to be an assistant teacher explaining to them what they were unable to understand, but if the situation was reversed and students relied on artificial intelligence to perform the effort itself without trying to understand the required lessons, this impact becomes significantly negative.
The research emphasizes the importance of providing appropriate support and flexible evaluation mechanisms, as students proficient in technology benefit more from artificial intelligence technologies than others, regardless of the educational level.
