Khaberni - Iraqi rights advocate Hamsa Jasim was killed on Tuesday in the city of Al-Kut, the center of Wasit Governorate, after unknown gunmen fired at her inside her car in the Al-Amiriya area north of the city, leading to her immediate death.
According to security sources, security forces immediately cordoned off the crime scene and transferred the victim's body to the forensic department, while the perpetrators fled to an unknown location. The sources confirmed that investigations are still ongoing to determine the identities and motives of the assailants.
Local media reported that Jasim worked as a "rights employee at the National Security Advisory."
For its part, the Palm Center for Rights and Freedoms strongly condemned the assassination incident, calling on the authorities to "pursue the perpetrators and uncover the facts quickly, and to seriously deal with any information about attempts to obscure the case or links of the perpetrators to influential entities," warning that any negligence could lead to "erosion of citizens' trust in the justice of the state."
This crime is the first of its kind in years in the province of Wasit, which has been relatively stable, raising questions about the background of the incident and its implications on the security and political scene in Iraq.
