Jordan  New regulatory steps to combat electronic gambling applications

Khaberni - The Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, Sami Samirat, emphasized the importance of enhancing coordination between governmental and regulatory authorities to curb the spread of electronic gambling applications, pointing out that the ministry is working on developing advanced regulatory and technical tools within the "Hakim" project, in collaboration with security and judicial authorities, to monitor electronic applications and mitigate their risks.

This was discussed during a meeting held by the Azm Parliamentary Bloc, chaired by MP Ayman Abu Haniya, on Tuesday, which was dedicated to discussing the risks of electronic gambling applications and their negative repercussions on family security and the national economy.

Samirat clarified that these efforts fall within the ministry's strategy to bolster the digital economy and implement concepts of automation and technical governance to ensure effective and transparent management of digital files. He noted that the ministry conducts awareness campaigns targeted at youth and parents to educate them about the dangers of these applications and reporting mechanisms, in addition to providing safe digital job opportunities that help channel the energy of youth towards productive and constructive activities.

He also announced the launch of the electronic signature service for official bonds, a qualitative step towards comprehensive digital transformation, aimed at accelerating legal and administrative procedures and enhancing their efficiency.

 

Calls for strict legislation and community awareness

For his part, MP Ayman Abu Haniya emphasized that the spread of electronic gambling applications among youth poses a real danger to society, causing family disintegration and financial addiction. He called for the need to tighten legal and technical oversight to curb their spread and to work on protecting the social fabric from their destructive effects.

He stressed the importance of adopting an integrated legislative and regulatory system that controls these applications and limits their exploitation, noting the necessity of activating educational, media, and pedagogical roles in combating dangerous behavioral phenomena and enhancing financial literacy to raise the awareness of youth and families and reduce the risks of financial addiction and misuse of credit cards.

 

Advanced supervisory efforts

In turn, Lara Al-Khatib, the Chairwoman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, confirmed that the authority pays special attention to the file of electronic gambling applications and works on developing advanced technical monitoring systems to control any unauthorized uses, in cooperation with the relevant authorities.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Digital Economy, Samira Al-Zoubi, and the Director of Policies and Strategies and Entrepreneurship, Abdul Qader Al-Batayneh.

 

Parliamentary support for national efforts

A number of deputies, including: Mohammed Al-Marayat, Moayad Al-Alawneh, Ibrahim Al-Sarayreh, Eyad Jabreen, Ibrahim Al-Jabour, Mohammed Salameh Al-Ghweiri, Huda Naffa, Hussein Al-Tarawneh, Walid Al-Masri, and Mohammed Bani Melhem, expressed their full support for the national efforts aimed at combating electronic gambling and safeguarding social and economic security.

They affirmed the importance of integrating roles between the legislative and executive branches, and the necessity of joint work to devise effective solutions that limit the phenomenon and protect the various societal categories from its dangerous repercussions.
