Trump imposes a 25 tariff on imported trucks starting next month

Khaberni - US President Donald Trump announced on Monday through his Truth Social platform that heavy trucks imported into the United States will be subject to a 25% tariff beginning November 1st.

The White House attributed this measure to "national security" issues, aiming to support American truck manufacturers such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, and Mack Trucks.

Trump announced on September 26 his intent to impose tariffs on several sectors, such as pharmaceuticals, furniture, and heavy trucks.

The US President launched a protectionist campaign by imposing tariffs based on the country or region of origin of the goods, rather than the nature of the imported products.

However, the legality of these geographic tariffs has not yet been proven, and the US Supreme Court is expected to issue its decision on this matter at the beginning of November, after a federal court ruled many of the taxes announced by the president in this context to be illegal.

At the same time, Trump imposed sector-specific tariffs, which also included cars, steel, aluminum, and copper, based on a different legal foundation.

The question remains how the tariffs on trucks will align with some existing trade agreements, such as the one linking the United States with Canada and Mexico, or the one announced this summer with the European Union.
