Khaberni - The director of the Cyber Crimes Unit at the General Security Directorate, Colonel Mahmoud Al-Mughaira, confirmed that the unit closely monitors sources of fake content produced using artificial intelligence technologies, emphasizing the necessity to take legal actions against violators.
Al-Mughaira explained in a statement to "Al-Mamlaka" channel that the unit closely cooperates with the Arab and International Police Management (Interpol), which enables it to pursue "cyber criminals" and accurately identify their identities and information.
He pointed out that the unit had recently noticed a significant increase in the spread of fake video clips across social networking sites and the internet, some of which are used in committing cyber crimes. He added that this has led to a clear warning from the unit about the dangers of using deepfake technologies and artificial intelligence in this context.
Al-Mughaira highlighted that the Cyber Crimes Unit receives complaints from citizens and works on tracking the sources of suspicious videos, leading to the arrest of the involved parties and their referral to the judiciary. He also noted that the unit possesses advanced tools and technologies capable of detecting digital manipulation through analyzing voice, facial details, and image movement within videos.
The Cyber Crimes Unit has renewed its repeated warnings regarding the misuse of modern artificial intelligence technologies, which are used to generate videos or pictures that portray individuals from the community, public figures, both official and private, for criminal purposes such as financial fraud, defamation, blackmail, or inciting community and family strife.
The unit confirmed that it still receives complaints linked to these warnings, whether related to falling victim to fraud, defamation, blackmail, attempts to ignite community or family strife, and the legal responsibility incurred after publishing photos and videos believing them to be real and bearing all legal consequences.
The unit urged the importance of awareness, verification, and not to publish, deal with, or interact with any unauthenticated videos as a necessity for electronic protection of individuals and to avoid legal accountability.
