Khaberni - The archaeological site of Mukawir observed the inauguration of the protection and rehabilitation project works, funded by the European Union for 5 million euros, aimed at enhancing cultural heritage and supporting sustainable local development in Jordan.
The project inauguration ceremony was attended by the representative of the Minister of Tourism, the Director General of the Department of Antiquities Fawzi Abudanah, the European Union Ambassador to Jordan Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavvas, the Ambassador of the Republic of Italy Luciano Pezzotti, and the Head of the Middle East Unit in the Directorate General for the Middle East and North Africa at the European Commission (DG MENA) Anna Bierce, along with several representatives from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, and members of local communities at the Mukawir archaeological site.
Abudanah stated, "The launch of the protection and rehabilitation project at the Mukawir site embodies Jordan's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage as a pillar of national identity and sustainable development. Protecting heritage is not just about preserving the past, but an investment in the future that enhances cultural tourism and creates real opportunities in local communities."
From his part, Ambassador Chatzisavvas expressed, "Today, we are not only preserving exceptional sites from human history, but also building new opportunities for local communities," adding that "the European Union is proud of its partnership with Jordan in this joint mission to protect cultural heritage and enhance sustainable development."
For his part, the Italian Ambassador confirmed that "the inauguration of this project represents a new chapter in the solid cooperation between Italy and Jordan in the field of cultural heritage. Through this EU-funded initiative, Italy reaffirms its commitment to contribute to the preservation of Jordan's rich archaeological legacy, not only as a witness to history, but also as a driver for comprehensive and sustainable development and empowerment of local communities."
Mukhlid Al-Qa'aydeh, on behalf of the local community, expressed his gratitude for implementing the project in Mukawir, which will open many doors for employment, and without the support of the European Union and the Italian Embassy, this area would not be as it is today.
The ceremony included a detailed presentation of the works to be implemented at the site, which include archaeological surveys, restoration and fencing works, installation of interpretive panels, and development of visitor facilities. The Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) will execute this initiative in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Department of Antiquities, to ensure sustainable site management and enhance the contribution of cultural heritage to local development.
