Khaberni - The secret to the benefits of onion oil for hair lies in its sulfur content, a key component in keratin, the protein that makes up most of the hair. According to a report published by the Times of India, applying onion oil to the scalp enhances blood circulation, nourishes hair follicles, and generally promotes hair growth. Onion oil is easy to prepare at home, as follows:
Ingredients
• Two fresh onions sliced
• 500 grams of coconut oil
• 15-20 curry leaves
• 10-15 fenugreek seeds
• 10 cloves of garlic
Step 1: Mix all the ingredients together and stir in a pot.
Step 2: Boil the mixture on low heat until the onions turn brown.
Step 3: Boil the mixture then let it cool.
Step 4: Strain the oil then store it in an airtight container.
Benefits of the Ingredients
Onion: Known for its ability to strengthen and thicken hair, it is rich in sulfur which boosts collagen production in the scalp quickly. Collagen produces new and healthy skin cells, enhances hair growth, and prevents hair loss.
Garlic: Eliminates germs and bacteria that harm the scalp and hinder hair growth. Additionally, rich in Vitamin C, it boosts collagen production and stimulates faster hair growth.
Curry leaves: Rich in antioxidants and protein, they cleanse and moisturize the scalp, remove dead hair follicles, and prevent hair loss.
How to use
Onion oil can be used twice a week, leaving it on each time for 3 hours before washing the hair with a good shampoo free of sulfates and parabens. Results are likely to be seen within about three to four months. However, be warned of the unpleasant smell that can emanate from the head, which experts advise against going out before it disappears.
Possible Side Effects
Possible side effects of onion oil may include dryness, redness, and irritation of the scalp, which is often due to high sulfur content. Care should also be taken for other side effects such as eczema and hair dryness, and sometimes severe inflammation.
