Khaberni - Marcelo Galina, the Brazilian goalkeeping coach of the Iraqi national futsal team, died on Saturday evening after falling from the third floor at Ashur University during a training session for the team, in preparation for the Asian Cup qualifiers scheduled in Saudi Arabia this month.
A well-informed source told the France Press agency that "Galina fell during the Iraqi national futsal team's training from the third floor in the sports hall at Ashur University due to his foot slipping from the upper passage overlooking the hall."
The source added that "the player Mohannad Abdul Hadi tried to quickly catch the coach's hand but could not reach him in time, causing him to fall on his head."
Mohammad Nasser, a member of the Iraqi Football Association, told the media, "We were shocked by the accident that the goalkeeping coach of the Iraqi national futsal team encountered, falling in the Ashur University hall during training."
He explained that "according to what was reported to us by the manager of the futsal team, Ali Issa, along with the staff present there, the goalkeeping coach was filming the goalkeepers from above the hall, but unfortunately there was an opening that the coach did not notice, causing his foot to slip and he fell to the bottom of the hall."
The medical team for the Iraqi national team tried to rush Galina to the nearby Al-Karamah Hospital next to Karkh in the capital Baghdad, but he breathed his last and passed away.
The Iraqi Football Association contracted Galina last August alongside his fellow countryman, coach Joao Carlos Barbosa.
