Speed 173 kmh Two Chinese Provinces Prepare to Face Typhoon Matmo

Khaberni - The provinces of Hainan and Guangdong in southern China have activated a level four emergency response to confront Typhoon "Matmo".

The meteorological directorate in Guangdong expects the typhoon to make landfall on Sunday, along the coast between western Guangdong and eastern Hainan Island.

Meanwhile, the meteorological directorate in Hainan expects winds ranging from 151 to 173 km/h, categorizing it as a severe typhoon. "Matmo" is expected to impact the island from today until tomorrow, Sunday, coinciding with the peak travel period during the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays, which last for 8 days.

Relevant authorities have urged the strengthening of safety measures at tourist sites including coastal, water, and mountain areas throughout Hainan. Major airline routes and ferry services across the Qiongzhou Strait, as well as high-speed rail operations, are likely to be affected from tonight, Saturday, until tomorrow, while services are expected to resume normally by Monday morning.

In Guangdong province, the typhoon is expected to cause heavy rainfall over coastal cities and regions to the west of the Pearl River estuary.
