Khaberni - A US court sentenced a woman from Texas to five years in prison for her attempt to drown a three-year-old American Muslim girl of Palestinian descent in an incident that occurred in May 2024.
The local police stated that the motive behind the crime was racial bias.
Court records and proceedings reported by CBS News and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram show that Judge Andy Porter sentenced Elizabeth Wolff (43 years old) after she pleaded guilty to attempted murder and injuring the child.
Authorities charged Wolff last year following the incident, which was denounced by then US President Joe Biden.
Human rights advocates warn of an increase in threats against Muslims, Arabs, and American Jews since the Israeli military campaign began in Gaza in 2023.
The incident took place in a swimming pool of a residential complex in Euless, Texas. Wolff had an altercation with the child's mother.
The police report noted that the mother was also in the pool with her six-year-old son and asked Wolff where they were from.
The report stated that Wolff attempted to drown the little girl and grabbed the boy. The mother rescued her daughter from the water, and paramedics confirmed the children's safety after a necessary check-up.
Incidents that have raised concerns about bias against Muslims include a brutal stabbing that killed a six-year-old American child of Palestinian descent in Illinois, another stabbing incident involving a Palestinian-American in Texas, and a violent attack on pro-Palestinian demonstrators in California.
