Morocco Generation Z Protests Demand Government Resignation

Khaberni - Demonstrators led by youth took to the streets of Morocco, on Thursday, for the sixth consecutive night demanding improvements in schools and hospitals amid calls from some for the government to resign.

The protests spread to 12 cities, including Casablanca.
Hundreds of protesters shouted asking King Mohammed VI to intervene against the government headed by Aziz Akhannouch, and the crowds chanted "The people want to topple Akhannouch" and "Government, leave!" while the protests continued peacefully.

In his first public statement, earlier, Akhannouch said he was saddened by the deaths on Wednesday. He praised the efforts of law enforcement in maintaining order and noted that the government is ready to respond positively to the protesters, without detailing the reforms under discussion.
Akhannouch said: "A dialogue-based approach is the only way to deal with the various problems facing our country."

Security forces opened fire on protesters last Wednesday, resulting in three people in Kaliat, a small town outside the coastal city of Agadir. The Moroccan Interior Ministry said the three were killed by gunfire while attempting to seize police weapons.
The demonstrations organized by a leaderless movement known as "Generation Z 212", dominated by youth knowledgeable about the internet, surprised the country, emerging as one of the largest protests in Morocco in years. By midweek, it seemed to spread to new locations, despite the absence of permits from authorities.
Participants in the so-called "Generation Z" protests denounce what they consider widespread corruption at the expense of ordinary citizens.
