Khaberni - The International Federation of Football (FIFA) has settled the debate sparked by the statements of the American President Donald Trump about the possibility of moving some matches of the 2026 World Cup from American cities, confirming that this decision falls exclusively within its authority, and no political official has the right to interfere in it.
While participating in the “Leaders Week” forum, Victor Montagliani, vice president of FIFA, said that the tournament belongs to the International Federation alone, adding: “FIFA is the only entity authorized to choose the host cities, and no government or political party has a role in this process”.
He affirmed that football has a power that surpasses speeches and personal interests, explaining: “We respect leaders and governments, but the game transcends individuals, systems, and slogans”.
When asked about the degree of influence of the statements and political pressures on FIFA's work, Montagliani answered jokingly: “The matter undoubtedly causes a headache.. but such is the power of football, it is bigger than any individual and any country”.
He pointed out that the International Federation has previously dealt with more complex situations, but it always succeeds in protecting the independence of its organizational decisions.
Trump had hinted days ago at the possibility of barring cities like Seattle and San Francisco from hosting tournament matches, explaining that they are “unsafe”, and added that his administration would intervene if necessary to ensure the security of the competitions.
According to the current schedule, the city of Seattle is set to host six matches at “Lumen Field”, while “Levi's” Stadium in Santa Clara, near San Francisco, is scheduled to host six other matches in the tournament which is organized for the first time with the participation of three countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico
