Khaberni - Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman said on Tuesday that Jordan advanced on the global environmental performance index in the year 2024 (77/180) and ranked first in the Greater Middle East region in 2024 in the components of climate action and reduced air pollution, and fourth in the same region.
He added during a meeting with media representatives titled: (Awareness… Protection… Sustainable Growth) at the Ministry of Government Communication that future projects to be undertaken by the ministry include distributing 1000 plastic containers, 3000 hanging baskets, 1000 metal containers, and installing 200 awareness panels.
He added that the ministry continues to implement national cleaning campaigns in all governorates and awareness programs, conducting lectures, environmental awareness initiatives, and distributing educational videos.
He emphasized the importance of awareness through text messages, as 5 million additional messages will be sent to reduce the random dumping of waste.
Suleiman pointed out that the legal framework that the ministry works under is based on the Environmental Protection Law No. (6) of 2017 and the Waste Framework Law No. (16) of 2020, and the regulations and instructions issued under these laws.
Suleiman explained that the sustainable environment engine is considered one of the main drivers within the economic update vision to enhance sustainable practices and improve the quality of life.
Suleiman emphasized the importance of digital transformation in the ministry's journey, coordinating with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship in this regard.
Suleiman said: "We have launched the environmental licensing service and have automated 10 services out of a total of 18."
Suleiman confirmed the ministry's continuous work on the national initiative to plant 10 million trees in 10 years.
He said the ministry is working on reforestation projects in Petra, Karak, Ajloun, Tafilah, and Zarqa.
Suleiman added: "We continue operating the national network for monitoring air quality and issuing reports, running a direct monitoring system for industrial air pollutants linked electronically to the ministry, and performing inspection visits to monitor all types of violations."
Suleiman pointed out that 160 cleaning campaigns have been launched, 50,000 biodegradable waste bags distributed, 500 metal containers distributed, and 250 awareness boards installed in all governorates as part of the implementation of the national environmental awareness plan.
He explained that in the waste recycling file, an assessment of the status of construction and demolition waste was conducted in Amman, Zarqa, and Irbid, and sorting containers were distributed and awareness programs implemented in the kingdom's governorates.
Meanwhile, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Government Communication, Zaid Al-Nawaiseh, emphasized the importance of enhancing environmental awareness concepts and establishing positive behavior towards the environment, noting that this is the responsibility of everyone and the government is working to activate all efforts to preserve the environment.
He said that cooperation with partners in the public and private sectors and civil society organizations is necessary to support the transition towards a green economy.
He explained that media institutions are concerned with supporting and reinforcing the national cleanliness campaign to instill a culture of preserving the beauty and cleanliness of environmental and tourist sites.
