Khaberni - Hollywood is witnessing outrage among actors due to a new "actress" fully developed by artificial intelligence, named Tillie Norwood, designed by "Chicoya" studio, with the ambition to make her the "next Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman".
Last week, Eileen van der Velden, the company's founder, revealed that many agencies began to compete to sign the virtual actress, which reignited fears of artificial intelligence replacing artists, serving as a major motivation for the mass strikes that paralyzed Hollywood in 2023.
Actors took to social media to express their opinions. Melissa Barrera, star of the horror movies "Scream" and "Scream 6", wrote on Instagram, "I hope all the actors contracted with the agency behind this resign their services, what a terrible thing!".
Mara Wilson, who played "Matilda", said, "Shame on these people, they have stolen the faces of hundreds of young women to create this artificial intelligence actress, they are not creators, they are identity thieves."
In a softer tone, Lucas Gage from the series "The White Lotus", accused his virtual counterpart of being "a nightmare to deal with" because she "fails to locate her place on set and is frequently late."
This controversy forced van der Velden to respond, as she clarified on Instagram on Sunday that "Tillie Norwood is not a replacement for humans, but a creative work," adding, "Just as animation, puppet shows, and special effects have opened new horizons without diminishing live performance, artificial intelligence offers another way to imagine and build stories."
She believed that virtual actors developed by artificial intelligence "should be judged as part of their own artistic genre, based on their merits, rather than being directly compared to human actors."
The use of artificial intelligence has become more apparent in recent months in creative industries, sparking controversy each time; for example, the virtual band "The Velvet Sun Dawn" surpassed the one million listens threshold on Spotify during last summer.
Vogue magazine, in its August issue, featured an advertisement showcasing an imagined model created by artificial intelligence.
