Khaberni - The Jordanian Seismological Observatory at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources announced on Monday the establishment of a new seismic monitoring station in the archaeological area of Petra to be a qualitative addition to the national seismic monitoring network, which currently includes 23 stations distributed across various regions of the Kingdom, with direct support from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

Ghassan Sweidan, the head of the Jordanian Seismological Observatory, confirmed that the station will contribute, through its new location, to recording and monitoring seismic events in the Petra area and surrounding regions, enhancing the Kingdom's capabilities in monitoring seismic activity across the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and analyzing its risks.

Sweidan highlighted the importance of this station due to its proximity to the Dead Sea Fault, which enables the monitoring of earthquakes on the Arabian plate and tracking seismic activity in the archaeological area.

He added that the technical team from the Seismological Observatory, consisting of engineer Ali Attoum, geologist Murad Al-Humaimat, and Murad Abu Shuqara, successfully installed and operated the station.

Sweidan expressed his gratitude to His Excellency the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, the Honorable Secretary-General Engineer Amani Al-Azzam, and the Petra Region Authority for their support and facilitation of the technical team's task in the implementation.
