Egypt Thwarting a Hesm plot and the killing of militants and a civilian in Cairo

Khaberni -The Egyptian Ministry of Interior announced on Sunday that a raid aimed at thwarting a "terrorist" plot attributed to the armed "Hesm" movement, resulted in the killing of two militants and a civilian.

The ministry said in a statement that during the raid on the "terrorists' hideout" in the Boulaq al-Dakrour district near downtown Cairo, "they started firing bullets randomly in the direction of the forces and the surrounding area", which led to the death of a passerby before they were shot and killed.

The raid was organized based on recent intelligence information indicating that the Hesm movement, which Egypt considers the armed wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, is working on "preparing and planning to revive its activities, and commit hostile operations targeting security and economic establishments", according to the same source.

The statement mentioned the names of five of the leaders of the alleged plot, all of whom are members of the Hesm movement, and all are sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment for carrying out a series of attacks after the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

The Hesm movement, which had previously been accused of carrying out several assassination attempts and bombings between 2016 and 2019, had disappeared from the public scene.

The Ministry of Interior said on Sunday that one of the suspects killed in the shooting had received advanced military training "in one of the bordering countries" before entering Egypt "through desert paths" to carry out attacks.

The ministry's statement came after a video spread on social media this month showing militants training in a desert area, attributed to the Hesm movement.
