For Healthy Sleep When Should Mattresses be Changed

Khaberni -A sleep specialist urged people to regularly change their mattresses, as while they may appear clean on the outside, the situation is different on the inside.

While experts recommend changing the mattress every 7 to 10 years at most, expert Edward Estivill said: "You should change the mattress every 5 years. If we could see what's inside them, we would run."

Estivill emphasized that "we need to pay attention to this matter when it is the place where we spend most of our lives".

According to "Sori Life", Dr. Edward Estivill, born in Barcelona, is one of the leading specialists in sleep medicine in Spain and has authored several books about sleep health.
The mattress is not a luxury

In his advice, he stated: "Having a suitable and clean mattress should not be considered a luxury, but rather it is something we all need for our basic health, like getting a good amount of rest, and avoiding neck and back pains."

He continued, "For this reason, mattresses should be changed at least every 5 years."

In a video on TikTok, Estivill pointed to an important procedure when buying a new mattress, saying: "You should stay at least 30 minutes in the store. Not everyone needs the same thing, and a quick choice can be costly."
A mattress for back pain

Estivill referred to a study about sleep quality and the role of the mattress. If you suffer from back pain, the best option for you is a "medium-firm" mattress, which is designed "to offer additional benefits for those suffering from undefined lower back pain."

The study suggested that "research has indeed proven that these mattresses improve sleep quality and reduce the risk of suffering from lower back pain. Beds equipped with active control features also improve spinal alignment and sleep quality."

Studies have found that regulating temperature through HHCM mattresses (high heat capacity mattresses) reduces the increase in skin temperature near the back and the core body temperature.

This type of mattress also enhances slow wave sleep and improves sleep continuity.
