Indonesia Satisfies Trump and Signs a Huge Trade Agreement

Khaberni -On Tuesday, American President Donald Trump announced on his platform "Truth Social" that he had reached a trade agreement with Indonesia, which might allow the Southeast Asian country to avoid tariffs exceeding the minimum threshold of 10% imposed by Washington.

According to the agency "France Press", Trump wrote, "We have just reached a great deal for everyone with Indonesia. I negotiated directly with their esteemed president," without offering further details about the nature of the agreement.

On July 8, Indonesia committed to importing more American agricultural products and oil to appease Washington and avoid a significant increase in tariffs on its products.

Donald Trump had threatened Jakarta with additional tariffs of 32% if a trade agreement was not signed before August 1.

The Indonesian Minister of Economy, Arlanga Hartarto, visited Washington in early July to negotiate the agreement, announcing the purchase of American agricultural products and oil, without specifying the value of these purchases.

He indicated that Indonesian companies would commit to spending a total of $34 billion.

According to official American figures, the United States will record a trade deficit of $17.9 billion (16.2 billion euros) with Indonesia in 2024, an increase of 5.4% over the year 2023.

Indonesia also signed a "political agreement" with the European Union on Sunday to reduce trade barriers, resulting from negotiations that began in 2016 to increase trade and investments between the two sides.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated, "There is huge potential in our trade relationship that has not been utilized. This is why this agreement comes at the right time as it will open up new markets."

The Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who visited Brussels to sign the agreement, declared, "This is progress after ten years of negotiations."
