Medhat ElAdl Sparks Controversy With His Statement About Umm Kulthums Granddaughters Retirement

Khaberni -Egyptian screenwriter Medhat El-Adl has sparked widespread controversy on social media platforms in recent hours, after he commented on the retirement of young artist Sanaa Nabil, the granddaughter of the "Planet of the East" Umm Kulthum, and her decision to wear the hijab.

During a conversation with a local media outlet on the sidelines of the inauguration of the new headquarters for the Association of Authors and Composers, El-Adl revealed that "he had previously attempted to contact Umm Kulthum's granddaughter to collaborate with her on a new artistic or musical work."

The Planet of the East and the family
El-Adl, relying on Sanaa's family history directly linked to one of the most important icons in the history of Arab music, mentioned that he was shocked when he learned that Sanaa had announced her complete withdrawal from art, preferring to stay out of the limelight, remarking, "Imagine Umm Kulthum like this, and her granddaughter like this, see where we have gotten to."

The same media outlets contacted Umm Kulthum's granddaughter, and her father responded saying: "Dr. Medhat’s opinion is his personal opinion and there's no comment on his words", and the family confirmed that Medhat El-Adl's statements reflect only his personal opinion and do not necessarily mean they reject or are surprised by what Sanaa has chosen for herself, rather they pointed out that they respect her conviction and the step she has taken.

The family of the Planet of the East explained in media statements that Sanaa's decision is a personal one based on her own convictions, where she decided to completely dedicate her life to spiritual and religious pursuits, moving away from the artistic life entirely. They pointed out that she has worn the hijab and devoted her time to worship and prayer, which does not conflict with the freedom of choice and decision in anyone's life.

El-Adl's comment ignited the social media platforms and reopened a public debate about the impact of an artist's legacy on their family and the presumed pressure on the heirs to continue the artistic journey. Followers pondered: Is it rightful for art to be "inherited" through generations? Or should personal choices be respected, even if they are surprising?
