Tips for Overcoming Ear Pain While Flying

Khaberni -During air travel, or diving in the sea during summer trips, some may feel discomfort due to ear clicking and increased pressure during takeoff and landing, which can be exhausting and very painful for some.

This pain or discomfort is caused by air pressure in the airplane cabin, and Dr. Michael Spexafer, an ear and throat specialist, explains the reason in a video on TikTok.

Spexafer says: "The eardrum is subjected to pressure due to high-pressure environments, usually caused by rapid changes in elevation. You will notice this if you ever feel a 'click' in your ears after a flight or dive."

Spexafer points to the Eustachian tube (between the nose and ear passing through the cheek), saying, "This happens because of this tube that connects the back of the nose to the inner ear, which adjusts the inner ear pressure."
Pressure Adjustment

"You can make this adjustment yourself by swallowing, or by holding your nose and blowing towards it." However, Spexafer warns that opening your mouth widely is undesirable.

According to "Suri Life," if these methods do not work, it is likely that you have what is called "Eustachian tube dysfunction." Spexafer explains, "This occurs when you have a cough or a cold, or when you feel severe congestion in your nose, causing the Eustachian tube to suddenly close."
Preventive Measures Before Travel

To avoid that, you can take some precautionary measures before flying.

Dr. Spexafer suggests using eucalyptus oil. He says: "Put it in boiling water and let the steam rise to your nose to open the Eustachian tube."

He added, "Or if you want a longer effect, you should start using a steroid nasal spray two days before your flight date. I recommend placing a spray in each nostril twice daily, about 3 or 4 days before your flight date."

If you've tried all these methods and they haven’t helped, then it might be time to visit an ear, nose, and throat specialist.
