Drone Attacks Target Erbil Airport and Oil Fields in Iraq

Khaberni -Reuters reported on Tuesday morning that an explosion occurred at the Sarsang oil field in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, which immediately halted production operations, with no human casualties reported so far.

Engineers in the oil sector explained that a fire broke out following the explosion, and production was stopped as a precautionary measure, while firefighting teams continue their efforts to control the fire and prevent it from spreading to other facilities at the field.

The American oil company "HKN" announced the halt of production at the Sarsang field following the explosion.

The causes of the explosion are still unknown, nor has any party claimed responsibility for the incident yet.

Additionally, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq witnessed simultaneous attacks with armed drones targeting Erbil International Airport and the Khor Mor Plant oil field in Erbil governorate on Monday, without recording any human losses.

The Counter-Terrorism Service in the region announced in a statement that an armed drone was shot down early today at exactly 02:20 local time, near Erbil International Airport.

The agency confirmed that the operation did not result in any human or material damage.

The agency said two armed drones fell in the Khor Mor Plant oil field between 20:20 and 20:25 local time, in a second attack last night.

The statement clarified that the attack did not result in any human casualties.

Unknown source
For its part, the Iraqi Security Media Cell, the official entity responsible for disseminating security information, stated that the two drones were "of unknown origin," explaining that the attack only caused material damage at the oil field site near the city of Erbil, and that coordination is ongoing with security and intelligence forces in the region to investigate the circumstances of the attack.

No party has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, which are part of a series of repeated operations targeting by drones and missiles in Iraq in recent weeks, especially in the north of the country, and often the drones fall in uninhabited areas, without any party claiming responsibility for them.

The regional authorities had announced on July 3 this month the downing of an armed drone near Erbil International Airport, where there is a base for the international coalition forces led by the United States to fight the Islamic State organization.

At that time, the Ministry of Interior of the region accused factions of the Popular Mobilization Forces of being behind the attack, which the Iraq federal government denied, considering it an "unacceptable and not permissible" accusation without evidence.
