Khaberni -The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai has announced the commencement of the new generation smart traffic signal control system «UTC-UX Fusion» at several intersections, which relies on artificial intelligence technologies, predictive analysis, and digital twinning. This is part of a comprehensive project to upgrade traffic lights that the authority has recently started implementing to enhance the efficiency of traffic management and improve the flow across the road network. The system is expected to be fully implemented across all major intersections in the emirate by the first half of 2026.
Navigation Experience
The authority explained in a post broadcasted on its official Instagram account that the project supports its vision in global leadership for easy and sustainable mobility, by improving travel time and reducing traffic congestion at intersections by up to 20%, thus enhancing the navigation experience for all road users, whether vehicle owners, public transport users, pedestrians, and cyclists, while granting priority to certain categories such as emergency and public transport vehicles.
The developed traffic light system features an advanced set of smart characteristics that contribute to upgrading traffic management in the emirate. Predominantly, its ability to predict future traffic movement enables dynamic adjustment of traffic light timings in accordance with anticipated changes in traffic density, thus enhancing traffic flow and raising the operational efficiency of the road network.
Digital Twinning
The system relies on digital twinning technology, which enables the creation of a virtual model that accurately simulates reality, thereby allowing for the testing of potential adjustments to traffic light timings and precise analysis of the results before they are adopted and implemented on the ground, reducing ineffective field trials and saving time and resources.
The new system also offers the feature of determining crossing priorities, used to give precedence to specific categories of vehicles such as emergency vehicles or public transport, thereby reducing response times and enhancing the efficiency of vital services.
The system benefits from integration with data from future smart sensors, where this data will be used to automatically adjust traffic light timings based on actual vehicle movements, allowing an unprecedented level of flexibility and accuracy in managing traffic flow at different times and under various conditions.
The «UTC-UX Fusion» system adapts to real-time traffic changes through data analysis and making smart decisions to adjust traffic light timings. Additionally, the new system supports future requirements and projects such as the cooperative interaction technology between vehicles and infrastructure «C-ITS/V2X», which enables communication between smart vehicles and traffic lights to improve traffic efficiency and effectively contribute to reducing travel time and enhancing traffic flow, thereby enhancing the navigation experience within Dubai.
