Tell me - San Diego, California witnessed a tragic incident on the morning of Thursday, May 22, when a small plane crashed in dense foggy conditions.
This led to a fire burning about 15 homes and the evacuation of a large number of residences in various neighborhoods, according to local authorities.
During a press conference following the incident, Dan Eddy, the Deputy Chief of the San Diego Fire Department, explained that the plane's fuel leak significantly contributed to exacerbating the situation, noting that flames spread quickly due to the presence of fuel at the crash site. He said: "We have aviation fuel everywhere, and we are urgently inspecting and evacuating homes."
Eddy mentioned that the plane directly hit several homes in Murphy Canyon neighborhood, pointing out that emergency response teams faced great difficulties due to the thick fog, which hindered visibility during the rapid response to the incident.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed in an official statement that the crashed plane was a "Cessna 550," and fell near "Montgomery-Gibbs" airport in San Diego, without revealing the number of passengers on board at the moment the statement was issued.
Despite no injuries or fatalities recorded so far, rescue and firefighting teams continue their work inspecting the affected homes and monitoring the aftermath of the fire. Residents from nearby areas were also evacuated as a precautionary measure, while ongoing investigations aim to determine the causes of the plane crash.
The accident occurred under weather conditions described as "extremely difficult" due to the dense fog, further complicating search and assessment operations, as aviation teams and relevant authorities continue to collect necessary information about the incident.
